CW 1 on Solid Waste Management Technologies took place in Mumbai. The Inaugural session included the lighting of the lamp, welcome address by the Team Leader, genesis of CW 1 by the Alternate Team Leader and the keynote address by the Chief Guest, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Dr. Mukherjee. This was followed by the release of the Report on Waste Management Practices in Europe.

Technical session 1 “Waste to Resource” examined the Swedish waste management policies, management of plastic waste, and waste to energy policies in Sweden. Technical Session 2 “Best Practices, Challenges and Opportunities in Solid Waste Management in India” examined the Indian scenario from the perspective of experts from Mumbai and New Delhi. Technical Session 3 “Policies on Solid Waste Management: EU and India,” analysed the policy framework in the two regions.

 

CW 1 closed with an all-inclusive panel with Indian and European experts and extensive discussion with the participants. Finally the Additional Commissioner of MCGM, Mr. Balamwar, provided the concluding remarks.

September 25, 2017

CW 3 was delivered at the offices of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The presentations and discussions focused on the the processes, advantages, challenges, and opportunities of landfill mining.

The meeting started with the welcome addresses. Then Professor Klaus Fricke delivered a lecture on the Aspects of Landfill Mining covering the resource potential of landfills, technological options, composition of waste fractions, resource recovery, etc. Dr. V. K. Verma, Alternate Team Leader of the EU Project delivered a presentation on the Indian scenario of landfill rehabilitation. Regulators (CPCB) and academicians (IIT) were fully in consonance with the process discussed. The Commissioner, of South Delhi Municipal Corporation appraised the participants that landfill mining and rehabilitation processes are much needed for waste management in Delhi.

September 27-29, 2017

CW 4 included workshop and training activities over a period of three days in Mumbai. On September 27th two meetings took place with representatives from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) focusing on landfill mining.

On September 28th, a series of presentations were delivered (e.g., Dr. Fricke, Dr. Karamanos, Dr. Verma) within the framework of IFAT India at the Mumbai Exhibition Center, as part of the project’s cooperation with Indus Media. The presentations lead to discussions about the processes, advantages, challenges, and opportunities of landfill mining. The presentations were attended by approximately 25 participants. Furthermore, the project team interacted with various technology providers from India and Europe, apprised them about the EU India project activities and distributed the project brochure, newsletters and reports.

On September 29th a site visit and sample digging took place at the Mulund landfill, where MCGM is planning to undertake landfill mining.

Technical session 1 “Best Practices & Novelties in Sewage Treatment & Sludge Management: European Union” examined the Swedish and international policies based on the experience of two Swedish experts. Technical Session 2 “Best Practices, Challenges and Opportunities in Sewage Treatment & Sludge Management: India” examined the Indian scenario from the perspective of experts from Mumbai and New Delhi. Technical Session 3 “Policies on Sewage Treatment and Sludge Management,” analysed the policy, institutional and administration framework in the two regions. CW 2 closed with an all-inclusive panel with Indian and European experts and discussion with the participants.
